One of the most striking things for me in this work is the anthropomorphic language used for the plants. While it has been pointed out in another post I don't think the use of this technique can be talked about enough. While it could have been a boring work about plants, instead it is intriguing and drew my attention!! From the opening line of "Descend, ye hovering sylphs!" all the way through we are given a description of what these plants are in human terms that we can relate to. My first impression...ignoring the footnotes...was a love poem. The story of lovers who long to be together. There is jealously and envy...all of the human emotions that makes this seem to be about more than just mere plants. Darwin did a fine job of keeping me enthralled; now I've just got to read through and decipher all of those notes <(^_^)>
