After reading, I found my thoughts kept coming back to why the thorn was important to the poem. I had a lot of speculation about whether it was a bigger symbol or if perhaps it was just the remnants of a rose that had been stuck into the ground-its thorns and blossom having fallen off, itself just a dead shell of what once was. This lead me to thinking that Martha Ray was also dead. What people were seeing is her ghost.
I also liked finding out through the foot notes that said Martha Ray was his friend's mother.
