I’m not sure how I feel about Lewis’ Bonny Jane. I’m having
a hard time with the take away. Jane wants to marry a peasant named Edward. He
father doesn’t approve. But a clergyman tells her he has a plan to get her to
Edward so long as she knows she loves him. The clergyman ends up trying to have
her for himself but a storm swamps the boat and they all die. I see this as a
ghost story more than anything. There isn’t really a take away. It gives you
the chills.
The story as far as within the poem is difficult to understand but once we went over it in class things began to unfold and I could picture the scenes in my head.
