Lewis Might Be My New Favorite Gothic Writer

I really, really enjoyed reading Lewis' poems. It might be because I have a soft spot for Gothic poetry.  Gothic Romanticism interests me because they share plenty of the same elements, but they are vastly different.  Lewis' poems also have a knight and courtly love element as well.  He seems to have had troubles with the ladies (or maybe he has a thing for damsels in distress) especially after reading "The Water King", "Bothwell's Bonny Jane", and "Alonzo The Brave".   Lewis' creates an interesting tone and mood when he basically kills off the women of his poems.  In "The Water King" and "Alonzo The Brave" the knights who are suppose to protect women are turned into monsters who steal them away for their own keeping.  In "Bothwell's Bonny Jane", the monk is another figure women are suppose to be able to trust, and yet Lewis turns this stereotype into something else.  This makes his poems seem much more treacherous.  And treacherous poetry is my personal favorite.
